It’s always great when you take your kids to a new place they have never been, with new people they have never met and they act like complete douches! I know it’s because they’ve never been there and these people are strangers but come on! They are offering up video games and toys and you are sitting in the corner pouting and asking when we can go home when we walked in the door 2 seconds ago!
What do you do?
I’ll tell you what I do….
My kids always hate this but I tell them the longer they are grumpy, the longer we will be staying. Sometimes they snap right out of it, sometimes it takes a bit. But they always end up loosening up before the night is over.
I walk them around the house showing them everything, introducing them to everyone and trying to make them as comfortable as possible. But I will not baby them and hold them the entire time. They are 6 and 10. Big enough to play with each other and big enough get it after I have shown them.
I don’t come when they are yelling or calling me from the other room. I know they are sitting in the corner and only want to whisper something to me so no one else hears. They can come and find me and tell me whatever they want to. This is not a game.
I ignore, ignore, ignore. Yep. Best parenting tool ever! Are they hurt? Probably not. Are they sick? Probably not. They just simply don’t want to be where you want to be and sometimes that’s just tough shit! We do tons as parents for them that sometimes we probably don’t want to do. They can suck it up every once in a while and be with us where we want to be. They won’t admit it but they usually always end up having fun!
